General Overview

For the last eighteen years I have worked in the electronic test industry. I have worked on system testing, unit test and board test in turn with most of the time spent in producing test programs for board test ATE. More recently I have worked on Chip testing, validating and characterising silicon either for final IC test or for die testing on wafers, I also have a working knowledge of E-beam and Focused Ion beam. I have written around three hundred test programs, either ICT, functional, or combinations of the two, on a good cross section of the systems around, I have also used IEEE, and VXI to supplement areas where coverage was weak. I have a good understanding of the use of DFT and boundary scan, and have included tests where it was available.

In the recent past I have spent a lot of time on networking solutions, both for customers and for general office and factory use. I have also installed remote access service connections via modem and ISDN links, and have done web designs for my company. Currently I am running a project to implement the SECS 11 protocol into a back end application in the wafer sort area, this involves a 'C' based communication engine, a number of unix scripts and a Java front end GUI.

I am used to producing and giving presentations either in a sales support role or as part of training courses that I run. I have doubled as training manager, organizing and running a series of training courses from a couple of days up to three weeks.

In my last job I was looking after a small team supporting about two hundred and fifty systems world-wide, working on three different software operation systems, from M.D.A and Optical inspection through I.C.T. up to Functional test.

I am now with SABER, a business unit of NPTest inc.(previously Schlumberger) running >$100,000 projects for some of the largest silicon chip manufacturers in the world. I am responsible for a small team of people spread over northern Europe. I am highly motivated and enjoy meeting and working with the huge range of people that I have contact with.

Employment (in reverse chronological order)

2000 Onwards - Schlumberger Ltd, Ferndown Industrial Estate, Wimbourne, Dorset

Present salary - £37,000 + Benefits + Car

Joined Schlumberger as SABER Program manager. Responsibilities include remote management of a team spread over Northern Europe, Program management of contracts for Intel, Alcatel, ST Microelectronics and others, responsibility for generating new business in my area of UK, Ireland and Scandinavia, on site visits to existing customers with hands on involvement in projects. In addition to this I have created the European web page for my company, and am responsible for updating this on a regular basis, I also maintain the sales database for Europe.

1996 – 2000 - Innovate Ltd, 500 Pavilion Drive, Northampton Business Park, Northampton

Joined Innovate as Senior Applications Engineer. Responsibilities included machine installations, sales demonstrations and benchmarks, telephone support, on site support, system repair and maintenance, and all in-house training of customers in the use of Unix, and the Innovate Software Environment. During my first few months I was also responsible for wiring up and installing the network for the site, this comprised twin 24 way hubs and a combination of Windows NT, Windows 95, and Unix. The other main responsibility was providing turnkey solutions where these were required as part of the sale of a test system.

1998

Promoted to European Applications Manager with responsibility for a team of four looking after all U.K. and European customers, also with responsibility for North America, after the departure of the Applications Manager over there. Apart from organisational responsibilities most of my time was spent providing Unix based scripts and turnkey ATE solutions for our customers.

1999

Promoted to Applications Manager responsible for the pre and post-sales support of Innovate products world-wide, reporting to the managing director. In February 2000 Innovate ltd were bought by ITA of Hamburg in Germany and a new company was formed called Scorpion Technologies, and although I was confirmed as Applications Manager for the U.K. part of the new company it became apparent that the UK was to become merely a satellite for the German company and I started looking for alternative employment.

1990-1996 - Smiths Industries, Bishops Cleeve, Gloucestershire.

Started as A.T.E. Programmer in the Test Equipment Software section of The Central Engineering Department of Integrated Display Systems Division. I had to write software to functionally test the various modules used in Pilot display units; and design and have built suitable interfaces (both mechanical and electrical), to connect with various A.T.E. and IEEE equipment. This involved using a 'basic' based A.T.E. language and a certain amount of programming in another language, nominally either 'C', Pascal, or assembly language. I also used various CAD tools for circuit design, principally Mentor Graphics and Orcad.

Promoted to Senior A.T.E. Programmer with responsibility for assessing Smiths Industries requirement for test equipment, culminating in writing justifications for A.T.E. for the next decade. Then benchmarking the four companies selected and purchasing and commissioning the Schlumberger 970VXI functional tester that was the successful competitor.

Promoted to A.T.E. Systems Administrator with responsibility for maintaining the CAD to A.T.E. links (and increasingly acting as the site unix administrator), this work involved providing Mentor Graphics support for the hardware design team and creating the necessary scripts to ensure adequate back-up facilities for the system. The system comprised twenty or so Sun workstations running Solaris 2.3 connecting via TCPIP. This task was then passed over to the newly formed I.T. department, and the A.T.E. group was moved under the control of the Production department, this coincided with my departure.

1983 - 1990 - Thorn EMI Electronics Ltd, Blythe road, Hayes, Middlesex

Employed as Test Engineer in Quality Assurance Thorn EMI Electronics Radar group testing PCBs. After three months I moved to working on Genrad In-Circuit Testers provisioning PCBs. for test on this machine. Promoted to Senior Test Engineer and then to Software Engineer. Seven years of experience in writing software for several sorts of A.T.E. equipment. Mostly on D.E.C PDP 11 rsx11 plus, D.E.C MicroVAX and I.B.M P.C and compatible machines i.e. Compaq 286 and 386. Further promoted in Feb 1988 to Quality Software Engineer with responsibility for test systems, and production test support. Left as the site was due to move to Crawley, and the programming side of the work was finishing.

1981-1982 - R.G. Jones Ltd, Hallowell Close, Mitcham, Surrey.

Returned to U.K and worked as a Freelance Sound Engineer, mostly for the above company. Left to obtain qualifications in this field.

1979 - 1981 - Various

Travelled around Europe and the Middle East, working firstly as a Waiter, Labourer etc and then increasingly as an untrained Electrician, mainly in Israel.

1976 - 1979 - Lombard North Central Banking, 5860 Southside Street, The Barbican, Plymouth

Employed as Trainee Representative. Left after four years having decided that chasing bad debts for a living was rather depressing and not very profitable. Obtained first part of the Institute of Bankers examinations.
